BIZWORLD:Community & Politics

Revisiting Why

By Dennis Kelly, CEO Zoo Atlanta

My younger grandsons can’t read our interpretive signs. They don’t understand the word “endangered,” and I don’t know how to explain it to them. I know that the word refers to wildlife that is disappearing from the planet and the loss of wild places and ecosystems so spectacular that people travel great distances to see them before they disappear. But I would not know how to tailor this explanation for a 3-year-old when he turns to me and asks, Why are all the gorillas gone?

Over-consumption of natural resources is threatening some of the world’s most important species.
Conservation is a challenge, and it is easy to feel discouraged. It is also easy to believe that a single person cannot affect change.

TIPS: For Business Decision Makers

What Every Business Owner Should Know About Money
"All of you were given two great gifts: your mind and your time. It is up to you to do what you please with both. With each dollar bill that enters your hand, you and only you have the power to determine your destiny. Spend it foolishly, you choose to be poor. Spend it on liabilities, you join the middle class. Invest in your mind and learn how to acquire assets and you will be choosing wealth as your goal and your future. The choice is yours and only yours. Every day with every dollar, you decide to be rich, poor or middle class."

The flattening and shrinking of the world has enormous impact on economies, businesses, communities and individuals. The security concerns from 9/11, the rise of identity theft, immigration and trademark infringements requires that we understand globalization now. Maybe your web site needs multiple language options? Are you innovating or just keeping up? How much are your labor costs impacted by employees surfing on your time and equipment? The new landscape requires consideration.
